TRAINING PROGRAM FOR APLICATIONS OF SYNCHROTRON LIGHT IN ARCHAEOLOGY AND CULTURAL HARITAGE STUDIES

With the decision of the Council of Ministers dated 05.11.2012 and numbered 2012/3928, Turkish Energy, Nuclear and Mineral Research Agency (TENMAK) was authorized as the national contact point of the Synchrotron-Light for Experimental Science and Applications in the Middle East (SESAME). Within the framework of this authority, TENMAK supports Turkish researchers to benefit from the infrastructure established in SESAME, and carries out activities so that Turkish users can benefit more from the technical opportunities of SESAME and contribute more to the development of the country with the studies carried out.

With all its infrastructure, SESAME serves in the fields of cultural heritage and archeology, as well as in many areas where synchrotron radiation is used. Besides, it is known that the results obtained from studies carried out with synchrotron-based experiment stations give thousands of times more precision and detail than studies carried out with laboratory systems. Currently, three test stations (SR-FTIR, SR-XRF/XAFS, SR-MS) are actively installed within SESAME. Until the end of 2023, two more experimental stations (SR-XAS/SR-XFS, SR-Tomography) will be put into operation.

Within its region, The Republic of Türkiye has a leading role in terms of archeology and cultural heritage. The number of national and international archaeological excavations, surveys, restoration and conservation projects carried out every year in our country is over 600. Cultural heritage studies must have an interdisciplinary structure. In addition to inorganic materials (stone, ceramic, mineral, metal, glass, pigments), organic materials such as human, animal and plant remains are also obtained from field studies. Though, it is ensured that the relationship of human with nature is analyzed in long processes. At the same time, paleoclimate, paleoenvironment and paleoecology studies, which can shed light on current environmental problems, require the systematic creation and processing of scientific data. Hence, the application of advanced analyzes in all areas of cultural heritage studies, especially in archeology, is a necessity in order to catch up with the era and compete in science.

Within this context, your participation in the course, which will be held in Istanbul on 18-19 March 2023 in cooperation with TENMAK - Istanbul University, for the purpose of introducing SESAME, providing training to potential users by experts in their fields, and creating/discussing possible projects that may be proposed to SESAME, will accelerate scientific studies on cultural heritage.

Applications in the fields of identification of cultural heritage by using synchrotron lights and in areas that can potentially be used will be shared with the participants during the " Training Program for Applications of Synchrotron Light in Archaeology and Cultural Heritage Studies ".
